For the first time in almost a decade, brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith grace the cover of a Dawes record. It’s just the two of them this time, and as such, Oh Brother marks a distinctive new chapter for the California rock band — one that is both introspective and accessible, all while maintaining their beloved sense of sincerity. After the amicable departure of two bandmates last year, Taylor realized that the group’s natural evolution was nothing to hide from Dawes’ dedicated fans. He likens it to looking back on The Rolling Stones’ career — eras with Brian Jones versus Ronnie Wood — or Dire Straits’ lineup with and without brothers Mark and David Knopfler together, or The Cure’s fluctuating cast encircling Robert Smith. People change. Music evolves. But a band is still a band. “We’re not shying away from this information, because then it just seems cowardly or something,” Taylor says. “Rather than try to hide something, let’s celebrate it. Let’s call our record Oh Brother.” The title of Dawes’ ninth LP serves as a sort of double entendre too, an exasperated sigh acknowledging that change can still be challenging. “We’re gonna miss our dudes,” he says. “They’re still brothers.” Still, Oh Brother steers Dawes decidedly forward, honoring 15 years of Taylor and Griffin’s musical relationship, as well as the next era of their band. That spirit informed much of the album’s writing and recording, too. Each of the nine songs began with just Taylor on guitar and vocals and Griffin on drums. They initially tracked each one live together, before adding in additional instrumentation and collaborating with touring guitarist Trevor Menear in the studio. Additionally, Oh Brother is the first record the brothers have co-produced, working alongside longtime friend Mike Viola. Lyrically, the songs on Oh Brother encompass personal moments in their lives and larger ideas of what consistency and stability mean. “House Parties,” a musical sibling to 2015’s “All Your Favorite Bands,” came toward the end of the recording process for 2022’s Misadventures of Doomscroller. Shortly thereafter, “The Game” and “Surprise!” — a six-and-a-half-minute not-quite-center, centerpiece about life not going as expected — came as Taylor was settling into fatherhood. Elsewhere, “King of the Never-Wills” subtly addresses addiction and “Mister Los Angeles” serves as a sardonically satirical commentary on their hometown. At this point in the Goldsmiths’ career, Dawes has cemented itself as one of the most earnest, no-bullshit musical acts out there. To some degree, Taylor acquiesces, “I definitely choose to believe that definitive work can always be out in front of us instead of behind us, but it’s also a fact that we have established a personality.” They’re a band that can move seamlessly between folk rock, piano ballads, and sprawling jams while maintaining both an immediately recognizable sound and a freedom from expectations. Across its heartfelt songs — sometimes silly and sometimes serious, and all filled with sing-along choruses, deeply felt poetic lyrics, and sterling musicianship — Oh Brother highlights the band’s independence. Even as the Goldsmith brothers navigate new chapters in their personal and professional lives, they remain creative, ambitious, and inspired. “All you can really do is find out what are the most essential, truest, and idiosyncratic parts of yourself,” Taylor says. “And I like the fact that Griffin and I are kind of clinging to each other and holding on to each other more than we ever have. We’re grateful for each other in a new way. But we’ve also been through a lot. “It feels like we’re reborn in a way, and I mean that with so, so much love and gratitude to everyone we’ve ever played with before! This is what it means to be a lifer, to have iterations. It means having phases and chapters, and this is a very clear delineation as to the beginning of a new one. So Oh Brother feels like a ninth record, but it also feels like a first record.”

Over his years in music he has been privileged to share the stage with many bright lights in the music industry including James Taylor, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Don Henley, Dave Matthews, and many others.Brendan Mayer, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, has been building a following, laying his tracks in the music world. He released his first album, the “Getaway Car” EP, on Jimmy Buffett’s Mailboat Records, after touring a year with Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band in 2014. Fifteen seconds into his forthcoming 2nd album, “Good to be Here,” Phillip-Michael sings “Toes pointed toward the road / Hard times picking at my bones” outlining the odds he’s facing before barreling into an anthemic chorus; “I couldn’t walk away if I tried / I’m gonna light up the Sky.” It reads like a mission statement, setting the tone for the album. When Phillip-Michael Scales moved to Chicago he immediately began cutting his teeth as a musician. In 2018 he played 308 gigs. Phillip-Michael swears that “Chicago taught me how to hustle” which came in handy when he moved to Nashville and quickly found himself in rotation on the number one AAA radio station, Lightning 100. From there he released his debut album “Sinner-Songwriter,” toured Europe, had a song on national radio, played the Ellen Degeneres show, and opened national tours for Keb’ Mo’ and Caravan Palace. Staying true to yourself and continuing to climb when plagued by false starts, setbacks, and crippling doubt is a much longer and lonelier path. Being self-managed for the majority of his career, he’s no stranger to 8-hour drives behind tour busses, prepping for shows in closets or stairwells, getting off big stages to immediately sell his own merch, or pouring through books to learn more about the business. Perhaps that’s the reason his record feels like a modern take on Stax-era Soul where you could hear the blood, sweat, and tears of blue-collar artists singing their way to stardom. Scales also catalogs the mental aspects of the journey asking the kind of questions that keep you up at night. “Is this truly what you want? The latest album from Neal Francis, Return To Zero, emerged from the kind of visionary fever dream that only the most masterful and inventive artists are capable of bringing to life. Amid a grueling tour schedule that found him playing nearly 400 shows from 2021 to 2024, the Chicago-based singer/songwriter/pianist immersed himself in creating a beautifully strange entangling of timeless rock &amp; roll and ’70s-era dance music, merging supremely heavy guitar riffs with lush and pulsating grooves—all constructed sans digital programming, in keeping with his devotion to all things analog. Worlds away from the glitzy fantasia of archetypal disco, Return To Zero inhabits a far moodier atmosphere and ultimately makes for the most thrilling manifestation of Francis’ peerless musicality yet.Equal parts heady and hedonistic, pensive and euphoric, Francis’ third studio LP echoes both his deep-rooted psych-rock sensibilities and a lifelong affinity for classic funk. “I’ve always been intrigued by music that toes the line between funk and rock,” notes Francis. “In the past I’ve asked myself things like, ‘What would it sound like if Thin Lizzy cut a disco record?’ It’s something I’ve been fascinated with for a very long time, so I finally decided to really go for it.”The follow-up to his 2023 double live album and concert film Francis Comes Alive, Return To Zero marks Francis’ first full-length studio effort since In Plain Sight—a 2021 release acclaimed by the likes of leading rock critic Steven Hyden, who praised its “throwback big-band sound that recalls the highs of 1970s funk and swamp rock.” With his past work also including his 2019 debut album Changes (hailed as “the reincarnation of Allen Toussaint” by BBC Radio 6), Francis began playing piano at the young age of four and became an in-demand sideman while still a teenager, touring with revered blues artists and beloved instrumental band The Heard before embarking on his solo career. Over the years, he’s sold out headline shows all across the globe, supported the likes of Wilco, Black Pumas, and My Morning Jacket, appeared at major festivals such as Bonnaroo, Fuji Rock,  and Lollapalooza, and even performed at historic venues like Carnegie Hall.Like all of his studio work so far (including his 2022 EP Sentimental Garbage), Return To Zero finds Francis co-producing alongside his frequent collaborator Sergio Rios and recording live with members of his touring band (drummer Collin O’Brien, bassist Mike Starr, guitarist Kellen Boersma), elegantly showcasing his prodigious talent and dazzling originality as a keyboard player. Mainly created at Rios’ L.A. studio, the album’s grandiose yet warmly inviting sound also took shape from his close collaboration with composer/conductor Dom Frigo (who aided Francis by transcribing the LP’s symphonic string sections), Say She She (a Brooklyn-based psychedelic-soul trio who adorn a number of songs with their beguiling backing vocals), and a stacked lineup of co-writers that includes Queens of the Stone Age bassist Michael Shuman and Wild Belle co-founder Elliot Bergman.In the making of his most ambitious work to date, Francis faced countless moments of creative frustration—a factor that eventually gave the album its title. “I was cutting a lot of the vocals at home, using a hybrid process where I’d bounce the tracks from my computer to a tape machine and then record the vocals to tape,” he explains. “I’d be in my vocal booth in the closet with all our winter coats, and every time I needed to start over I’d press this button that says ‘RTZ,’ which stands for ‘Return To Zero.’ I was doing take after take and pressing that button over and over—it was a huge pain, but it also linked up with what I’ve learned in my meditation practice: no matter how frustrated you get, just remain calm and take inventory, and then begin again.”Although executing Return To Zero’s highly elaborate arrangements often involved a very time-intensive trial-and-error approach, the album-opening “Need You Again” surfaced from an immediate burst of inspiration after Francis attended a DJ set by Derrick Carter (a Chicago house legend who created a 12-inch remix of “BNYLV” from In Plain Sight). “My girlfriend and I went out to a queer dance party called Queen! and stayed till about four in the morning, and Derrick played a track that was a big rock riff over a funk beat,” he recalls. “The next day I went into the studio on very little sleep and started working on the demo for ‘Need You Again,’ and after I finished I couldn’t stop listening to it.” Featuring a guest spot from Grammy-winning guitarist Eric Krasno (Soulive, Lettuce), the result is a glorious entry point into the album’s groove-heavy soundscape, unfolding in sinewy riffs and larger-than-life rhythms as Francis narrates a tale of ruinous infatuation. “It’s a song about a love affair, and the experience of projecting magical qualities onto another person and feeling almost addicted or beholden to them,” he reveals. Another charmed moment in the album’s creation, “Broken Glass” was sparked from a session featuring Francis on bass and Shuman on drums, with the two soon conjuring the hypnotically potent riff that propels the track forward. With its viscerally charged depiction of lust and self-denial, the darkly majestic epic reaches a stratospheric crescendo at the bridge, when pounding drums meet with Say She She’s near-operatic harmonies. “Once we had that riff I started filling in some freeform poetry from my notebook, which had to do with the idea of taking direction in an intimate liaison,” says Francis. “It all came together so naturally because of how Michael was playing drums, bringing that Queens of the Stone Age heavy-rock thing I love so much.”One of the most dance-ready tracks on Return To Zero, “Back It Up” glides along on glossy synth lines and a playfully swaggering riff, imbuing a carefree spirit into Francis’ deliberately over-the-top confession of romantic desperation. “That song went through a few different phases before we got to the final iteration,” he says. “It took me a while to accept that it’s okay to have fun with the lyrics, instead of making everything so serious all the time.” Meanwhile, on “What’s Left Of Me,” Francis presents a gorgeously sprawling power-pop anthem built on his resplendent piano work. Co-written with Nashville-based songwriter Chris Gelbuda, the track arose from a piano-and-vocal demo captured at Chicago’s Fine Arts Building, soon evolving into a piercingly candid reflection on life on the road. “Chris and I are good friends and we got to talking about the challenges of being in a committed relationship while you’re on tour,” says Francis. “A lot of these songs were influenced by Electric Light Orchestra and the way Jeff Lynne synthesizes classical music and pop songwriting, and ‘What’s Left Of Me’ was definitely one where I was going for an ELO vibe.”Partly inspired by the funk and dance records he typically spins during his sets as an all-vinyl DJ, Return To Zero also encompasses everything from the spaced-out drama of “Dance Through Life” to the string-laced reverie of “Can’t Get Enough” (a collaboration with Durand Jones &amp; The Indications’ Blake Rhein that is a sublimely mellowed-out homage to acid-jazz pioneer Roy Ayers). In creating such a complex body of work, Francis found his sense of perseverance repeatedly tested. “Most of these songs were pretty hard-won,” he says. “There was a feeling of pulling out all the stops to achieve what I was going for, and in the middle of that I was dealing with some depression and exhaustion. I ended up learning a lot about myself, and now I feel like I’m in a completely different place in terms of my priorities with mental health.” Despite its more daunting aspects, the writing and recording of Return To Zero also brought plenty of moments of pleasure, including composing with strings for the very first time and tracking songs with his longtime bandmates. “All those guys are like my brothers, and there was a feeling of us working together with an almost athletic desire to get better every time we did a new take,” Francis says. “Those were really long days at the studio, but they were also so much fun.”Looking back on the making of Return To Zero, Francis points to certain crucial lessons absorbed while creating his most extravagantly realized work so far. “One of the main things I’ve learned is that every album is going to be its own journey; I can’t really take the arsenal of things I’ve learned in the past and expect them to save me from any kind of frustration with whatever I make next,” he says. “Creating art is always going to be a challenge, which maybe goes back to why AI-created music is never going to be all that compelling—it’s just too fucking easy. The best I can do is use what’s at my disposal and try not to freak out or despair when it gets difficult, and hopefully end up making something that gives people joy.”

Rooted in the rugged beauty of the western Arizona desert, Ashley’s music showcases the unique cowboy culture of her home state. “Many people don’t realize how western Arizona is,” she says. “Cowboy culture is so strong here, and being surrounded by ranchers and farmers has brought about many events and stories that influence my music.” Since bursting onto the scene as a teen, Ashley’s music journey began with a chance demo recording of cover songs that introduced her to key industry figures. That pivotal moment set the stage for her debut album Family Business and launched her career as a dynamic live performer. Her passion for the stage has fueled standout moments in her career — including a high-energy 90-minute set at Ak-Chin Pavilion, where she opened for Aaron Lewis and Eddie Montgomery at a special Veterans Day event. “It was a massive moment for me, playing for an audience of veterans,” she reflects. Her commitment to veterans is also integral to her mission. “I have so many loved ones who are veterans, and it drives me to want better for them,” Ashley says. Through her music, she has raised funds for veterans’ charities and worked to raise awareness for their struggles. On September 3rd, 1977, The Grateful Dead headlined one of the largest and most musically successful concerts of all time at Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ. In addition to the Grateful Dead, the show also featured the Dead family’s New Riders of the Purple Sage and the good-time, southern rock of The Marshall Tucker Band. This tribute extravaganza will feature selections from each band’s sets that day along with other deep cuts and original music inspired these three bands.​As Michael Falzarano tells the tale!Everywhere I toured with The New Riders of the Purple Sage for the past 20 years someone would come up to me at almost every show and say “I saw you guys at Englishtown.” Long story short, it seemed like a good idea to put a band together and pay tribute to that legendary September 3, 1977 show. Nancy Atlas and her band of Journeymen have been dominating the East End Music scene or Long Island for quite some time. Known for her raw, live performances and stellar songwriting Nancy and her band, The Nancy Atlas Project, have opened for almost everyone under the sun. To name a few: Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, Toots and the Maytals, Jimmy Buffett, Crosby, Stills and Nash… the list goes on and on. The reason is simple. When people want a solid act to open their show and get the crowd warmed up, they call  Nancy and her boys because they know they will deliver. Every time. Nancy grew up with gypsy blood in Commack, NY. Eager to get the buck out of dodge she spent her entire college years abroad at both Cambridge University in England and Richmond College in London and Florence.  She majored in art history, fine art, drinking lots of wine and talking shit. There was a serious recession going on the year she graduated college so instead of becoming a mad advertising executive she walked down to Portabello Road, London, bought a guitar for 60 quid and never looked back. It was pouring buckets of English rain that day so they gave her a black plastic bag to cover her guitar as it didn’t come with a case. Nothing, it is said, can stop true desire. Nancy now lives in Montauk, New York with her husband Thomas and her two sons, Cash and Levon, and her daughter Tallulah. When she is not writing a song or on stage rocking out, she can be found clamming with her kids, surfing with her kids, walking with her kids, reading with her kids or <a href="http://nancyatlas.com/?page_id&#61;285">cartooning</a> for her kids. With the arrival of their debut EP Life and Life Only, The Heavy Heavy immediately filled a longtime void in the musical landscape, delivering a soulful breed of rock &amp; roll untouched by modern artifice. As audiences across the globe grew enchanted with their era-bending sound, the UK-based band began selling out headline shows in major cities like New York and Chicago, opening for the likes of Black Pumas and Band of Horses, and earning critical comparisons to Jefferson Airplane, The Band, The Mamas &amp; The Papas, and more—all with only a handful of songs to their name, including the AAA radio top five singles “Miles and Miles” and “Go Down River.” After spending the past two years on the road and in the studio, The Heavy Heavy now draw listeners even deeper into their dreamworld with their long-awaited debut album One Of A Kind.Written entirely by co-founders Georgie Fuller and William Turner and mostly recorded at Turner’s studio in Brighton, One Of A Kind maintains the self-contained approach of Life and Life Only—a seven-song project acclaimed by outlets like NME (who named them an essential emerging artist for 2023) and The Guardian (who noted that The Heavy Heavy “write and play music with that lick of madness that makes early Fleetwood Mac and peak Stones so thrilling”). But in a departure from the EP, One Of A Kind leans away from Laurel Canyon-esque folk-rock and fully embraces their British roots, finding a particularly crucial inspiration in the gritty and groove-heavy hedonism of the Rolling Stones’ Goats Head Soup. “A lot of our EP was very bright and pretty, so we wanted to smash the door down like we do in the live show,” says Turner. “Because we were creating an entire album, there was so much more space to explore and expand,” Fuller adds. “It’s still undoubtedly that Heavy Heavy sound, but now we have all these other rooms to play around in.”For One Of A Kind’s lead single, The Heavy Heavy chose a sun-drenched and sing-along-ready number that serves as an auspicious bridge to the band’s new era. The last song written for the album, “Happiness” bends toward the lush psych-pop of Life and Life Only while introducing a new level of visceral intensity. “We felt we needed a song that had that summery, flowery feel of the EP, and somehow at the last minute we were able to pull magic out of thin air,” Fuller recalls. A fast fan favorite at their live shows, “Happiness” channels a bold determination to break free from loneliness and stagnation, ultimately providing an automatic mood lift thanks to The Heavy Heavy’s resplendent melodies and signature multi-part harmonies.Kicking off with a majestic bang, One Of A Kind opens on the rolling drumbeats and walloping riffs of its title track—a feverishly chanted anthem whose lyrics transform the listener into the protagonist of their own impossibly glamorous movie (e.g., “You’re getting down/You’re keeping on/You look the best/You’re all night howling”). Graced with a breathtaking vocal performance from Fuller (a classically trained singer), “One Of A Kind” quickly set the tone for the album’s larger-than-life vitality. “Something about the primal nature of that song inspired us to keep making songs that feel quite big and powerful,” says Turner. Later, on “Because You’re Mine,” The Heavy Heavy sustain that feel-good spirit and share a carefree love song lit up in slinky grooves and hallucinatory lyrics depicting what Fuller refers to as “the psychedelic daydream of a wandering nomad type—someone who goes wherever the wind takes them.” As One Of A Kind floats along, The Heavy Heavy endlessly push into previously uncharted sonic terrain, tapping into such unexpected influences as mid-’90s big beat on the bass-driven and gorgeously hazy “Miracle Sun.” “It’s a song with a lot of attitude to it—sort of our way of telling the world, ‘We’re living the way we want to live, and it doesn’t matter if you don’t understand,’” says Turner. Meanwhile, on “Feel,” the band merges the mesmerizing grooves of Madchester-era Britpop with a bit of idiosyncratic poetry (“I am a freeloader love junkie/A real heavy cannonball and I’m hungry…I stand between the sun, between the stone/I feel it in my fingers, feel it in my bones”). And on “Wild Emotion,” One Of A Kind offers up a country-infused serenade laced with galloping rhythms and twangy guitar tones partly inspired by the work of Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler. “That’s probably the most emotional song on the album,” Turner points out. “It’s meant to have a reassuring message, but at its center is the story of a woman who’s gone through a heartbreak and can’t find her way out of feeling hopeless and distraught.” After journeying through a whirlwind of sounds and textures—the hypnotic Mellotron of “Lemonade,” the frenetic psych-rock organ and skyscraping vocals of “Dirt,” the earthy acoustic guitar and sweetly playful harmonies of “Lovestruck”—One Of A Kind lands at the reverb-soaked splendor of its closing track, “Salina.” Named for a sparsely populated volcanic island off the coast of Sicily (an otherworldly spot Fuller and Turner visited on vacation), the slow-building epic unfolds in so many exquisitely strange sonic details: moody cello lines, thundering percussion, a spellbinding pedal-steel part simultaneously played by two separate guest musicians. “‘Salina’ was one of those moments where we let ourselves get experimental with the production and create a whole ocean of sound,” says Fuller. “We knew we had to put it at the end and let the reverb ring out in those final seconds—almost as if we’re leaving the album hanging in the air.”Formed in 2019, The Heavy Heavy emerged from a potent alchemy of their eclectic sensibilities. Hailing from the small town of Malvern (a stretch of the English countryside he describes as “a beautiful place full of hippies and longhaired people”), Turner took up guitar in his early teens and later played in a series of psychedelic/surf-rock bands, while Fuller’s extensive background includes performing at Montreux Jazz Festival as a teenager and acting in the London theater. As they moved forward with a mission of “making music that sounds like our favorite records ever” (including everything from Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac to folk-blues act Delaney &amp; Bonnie to Fleet Foxes), the duo dreamed up a batch of songs in a London flat and self-released an early version of Life and Life Only in late 2020, eventually catching the attention of ATO Records and signing with the U.S.-based label in 2022. Fueled in part by the breakout success of “Miles and Miles” (their ATO debut single), The Heavy Heavy’s five-piece live band soon began playing bigger and bigger venues and taking the stage at leading festivals like Bonnaroo, Boston Calling, and Newport Folk Festival, in addition to performing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” and “CBS Saturday Morning” and scoring major syncs with the likes of Nissan and Netflix’s “Outer Banks.”Because of the rapturous response to their debut EP, The Heavy Heavy found themselves in an unfamiliar headspace when it came to the creation of One Of A Kind. “With the EP we were making songs as a way to soundtrack our own lives, but now it’s a different beast—it’s no longer theoretical, which gives everything more weight,” says Turner. But in the end, the band discovered an essential touchstone in the connection they’ve forged with their fans over the last two years. “Not too long ago, a woman came up to us at a show and told us she was getting a tattoo of one of our lyrics to remind herself to keep pushing on and keep chasing her dreams,” Fuller says. “Moments like that always remind us that as long as we keep making what feels good, chances are it’s going to make other people feel good too. I hope this album feels like a great big party to everyone, and I hope it inspires them to live their lives however they want.”

When you hear Annie Trezza it&#39;s often hard to believe that all that sound comes out of one person. With groovy guitar riffs, 60&#39;s inspired melodies, and transportive lyrics, she projects an energy well beyond her size. Upon listening to Dylan and Beatles records on repeat at a young age, she felt compelled to pick up a guitar and start writing her own tunes at age 14. She spends her summers playing all around her home in Montauk, NY. In the off-season when she&#39;s not chasing the waves she&#39;s writing new music, and continuing to play anywhere in the world she finds herself. Between her distinctive voice and her poetic lyrics, it&#39;s hard not to get a little carried away when listening to any of her tunes. Vincent Neil Emerson has become a staple among folk and country music fans nationwide, celebrated for his honest tales of life on the road, heartbreak, and struggles of all sorts. His first LP, Fried Chicken &amp; Evil Women, from 2019, established him as a refreshing voice in the modern country music landscape. The songs from that first album were charming and playful songs, but didn&#39;t reveal the entirety of Emerson&#39;s story.On his brilliant new album, The Golden Crystal Kingdom, Emerson transcends the role of a honky-tonk country singer and becomes a chronicler of his history. The album is a bold continuation of the story he tells on Vincent Neil Emerson, with songs like the title track exploring the feelings he was left with after his days spent playing in Texas honky-tonks and dancehalls, and the track &#34;The Time of The Rambler,&#34; inspired by the early days of living in his car and busking on the streets.He was born and partly raised in East Texas, around his Choctaw-Apache family, and spent most of his life moving around the state. Raised by a single mother, he lost his father to suicide when he was nine. Emerson dealt with those feelings of abandonment and loss on his self-titled album, with the track &#34;Learning to Drown&#34; in particular.His grandmother and grandfather brought the family to Texas when Emerson&#39;s mother was a child, leaving their ancestral Choctaw-Apache homelands in Louisiana behind to try and build a better life for themselves and their children. Emerson always identified with his Native American roots, but it wasn&#39;t until 2021&#39;s self-titled album that he examined and tried to shed light on the devastating history of his tribe with the song &#34;Ballad of the Choctaw Apache.&#34;Sonically, The Golden Crystal Kingdom finds Emerson expanding his scope into rock and roll territory, tapping into the storied sounds of folk music gone electric, and following in the footsteps of artists like Bob Dylan and Neil Young. On the album, Emerson retains his diamond-sharp storytelling while imbuing the work with a freewheeling rock and roll aesthetic, creating an album as fun as his live shows and as cathartic as his previous work.With production from Shooter Jennings, Emerson wanted to establish some sounds as touchstones but emphasized following his own intuition for the aesthetics of his record. &#34;I didn&#39;t really want to model this record after anybody else&#39;s music, but I&#39;ve been heavily influenced by a lot of old rock and roll music from the sixties and seventies singer-songwriter music,&#34; Emerson explains.The album wasn&#39;t necessarily created as an opposing force to the country and folk sounds his fans have come to expect, but he did want to make a record that showcased another side of himself as a writer. He also leaned on friends and collaborators like Jennings, Steve Earle, and Rodney Crowell to help him flesh out this album.Emerson has been able to call these one-time heroes friends and mentors, and it is these relationships that have helped the songwriter find his confidence in writing about his personal history and standing up for the causes he believes in. Emerson wrote &#34;Man From Uvalde&#34; after the horrific and tragic mass shooting in the city of Uvalde, Texas, and he was initially hesitant to include the track on The Golden Crystal Kingdom. &#34;It&#39;s a daunting thing to try to dive into social issues in songwriting because I wasn&#39;t sure how people would really take it,&#34; Emerson says. &#34;I recorded a rough demo version of the song, and I sent it to Steve [Earle]. I just wanted to get his thoughts on it and see if it was worth anything. He got back to me, and he said he really liked the song and thought it was great. He gave me a few ideas and ways to look at the subject differently, and it really helped me finish the song. That encouragement gave me the confidence to include it on the album.&#34;The Golden Crystal Kingdom also pays tribute to some of the peers Emerson cut his teeth with in the music scene. He covers the Charley Crockett song, &#34;Time of the Cottonwood Trees,&#34; and is quick to pay tribute to his labelmate and dear friend Colter Wall. &#34;Those two had my back since day one. They&#39;ve been some of my biggest supporters, and they&#39;ve always inspired me to write better songs and encouraged me to pursue this,&#34; Emerson reflects. &#34;Especially at a time when I was starting out and I didn&#39;t really have a lot of encouragement or even self-confidence to do this, they were always there for me.&#34;As a kid who grew up in a trailer with a single mother, went through bouts of homelessness as a young man, and grinded through countless shows to get where he&#39;s at, Vincent Neil Emerson is never quick to praise his own work ethic. He always refers to the friends, family members, and collaborators who have shown their faith in his vision.But humility doesn&#39;t mean Emerson isn&#39;t one of the hardest working, most talented songwriters to emerge from the alt-country underground in years. His style is one of a kind, and his ability to blend tales of the everyman with tributes to his past, present, and future make him a peerless songwriter. On The Golden Crystal Kingdom, Vincent Neil Emerson carries on the torch of his singer-songwriter forebears while infusing the legacy with his unique and thrilling point of view.Kassi Valazza:&#34;Sometimes it takes four or five tries to realize something just isn&#39;t working,&#34; says Kassi Valazza. &#34;I wrote this after my thirteenth try.&#34; She&#39;s referring to the song &#34;Roll On&#34; specifically, but the stagnating pull of repeating patterns — and the brutalizing work of breaking them — inform every song on her new album From Newman Street. &#34;In songwriting and in life, you can&#39;t keep expecting the same thing to work every time.&#34;Valazza grew up between Prescott and Phoenix, Arizona. She penned her first song at age ten but in those early efforts to perform, found herself halted by stage fright of a clinical level. &#34;I&#39;ve gone to therapy for it,&#34; she says, half-laughing. She didn&#39;t stop writing music but she let less paralyzing means of expression lead the way, eventually enrolling in arts school for painting, an illustrative instinct that inevitably reveals itself in her vivid songwriting. It wasn&#39;t until she relocated to the Pacific Northwest as an adult that Valazza picked back up the proverbial — and actual — guitar.&#34;Zach Bryson was kind of like the honky tonk ambassador of Portland when I got there,&#34; Valazza says. &#34;He was so welcoming and encouraging.&#34; She discovered an inspiring, supportive artistic community, a less rigid relationship with musical output, and then — vocal nodules. &#34;It was actually kind of the best thing that could have happened, because I learned about the crossover of physical and mental that takes place in performance.&#34; Recovery entailed recognizing the reflexive functions of the voice in response to anxiety; as is the case throughout the human body, stress reactions can be damaging. &#34;Because I suddenly understood what was happening with my voice, I could handle it, wield it. I felt more confident.&#34; Valazza recorded an album with Bryson in an old-house-turned-studio. It was an informal, friendly endeavor, though not at all small. &#34;I think probably thirty people contributed,&#34; she says. &#34;I listen back to that album and I think &#39;this was me learning how to do this.&#39; I can hear that moment in time.&#34;Valazza&#39;s debut Dear Dead Days fused the Southwest&#39;s rustic romance with the Pacific Northwest&#39;s rocky realism and garnered Valazza a cult following. She landed a deal with Fluff &amp; Gravy, a label known for launching earthy, emerging treasures like Anna Tivel and Margo Cilker, and toured with folk favorites including Melissa Carper and Riddy Arman. Her sophomore album Kassi Valazza Knows Nothing followed, a glimmering set of sonic talismans among Ann Powers&#39; Favorite Songs of 2023 for NPR and Bandcamp&#39;s Best Country Music of 2023, with praise from KEXP, Uncut, MOJO, and Brooklyn Vegan to boot.By the time Valazza was ready to record her third album, she had spent a decade in Portland — and that, she realized, was enough. &#34;As someone with anxiety, I always want to know what&#39;s going to happen,&#34; she says. &#34;But knowing can be limiting. Getting comfortable with the uncomfortable, that&#39;s growth. That&#39;s what this album&#39;s about, really.&#34;On &#34;Weight of the Wheel,&#34; a weepy slide guitar underscores Valazza&#39;s listless lament: All things look the same / From the pillow on my bed / I&#39;m stressed out I&#39;m far away / There&#39;s dizzy dancing in my head. The song sounds like urgency, grief, surrender, and embrace — all at once. It&#39;s feeling like some kind of fight to outgrow / The way I fear slowing down before I&#39;m old. By 2022, that dizzy demise of cyclical living had set Valazza still — in a basement apartment there in Portland. &#34;You&#39;re going to be a different person after every album,&#34; she says. &#34;And you have to keep moving forward.&#34;Sights set on Nashville, Valazza landed in New Orleans. &#34;It wasn&#39;t the plan. I spent three months there between tours, and it just kind of happened.&#34; The bright newness of The Big Easy illuminated fresh inspirations and unexpected love. But it also cast a stark light on Valazza&#39;s sense of self; in a new place, you can see more clearly what you want to be, as well as what you haven&#39;t been. &#34;I discovered the less likeable parts of myself in that time,&#34; Valazza says. Album standout &#34;Your Heart&#39;s a Tin Box&#34; encapsulates precisely this, with a cynical-yet-sunny likeness to Joni Mitchell and lyrical acuity: I moved down to New Orleans / Thinking love would reappear / But people tell you everything / but what you wanna hear / You relied on fixated company / Now you&#39;re drowning in your ego&#39;s gluttony. The patterns of her Portland life had stalled Valazza. It wasn&#39;t the city&#39;s fault so much as the natural consequence of complacency, the stagnance that comes with too much of the same. Valazza knew she was due for a personal evolution, and when faced with those innate, bristling pangs of change, could soothe herself with that certainty.The track sequence on From Newman Street is audibly intentional — from a deep lull and dull itch, to a barbed clash with cognitive dissonance, to humble submission, and an ultimate, open-armed acceptance of new life. Poetically enough, half the songs on the upcoming album were written in Portland, the other half in New Orleans. Valazza returned to her former hometown to record with Matt Thomson at Echo Echo Studios, and titled the release From Newman Street in tribute to an apartment she lived in deeply and left with heavy heart. The album is as much a fond farewell as it is a fervent step forward.Valazza made the official move to New Orleans in February of 2024. &#34;Coming from placid, wintry Portland straight into Mardi Gras — I would not recommend it.&#34; She recalls the time with humor, grace, and sensitivity for her past self, qualities that shine through the album. &#34;I&#39;ve always been a believer that music is only good if it&#39;s really raw, really honest — probably coming from a place of hurt,&#34; Valazza admits. &#34;But I&#39;m trying to embrace chaos these days, and bring a little more light into my life.&#34;

<div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div>2019 marked Simien’s 34th consecutive New Orleans Jazz &amp; Heritage Festival – the gold standard for diversity in American roots music.</div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>2014 proved to be another memorable year when Simien &amp; his collaborators from the Zydeco Experience band were honored with their second GRAMMY award in Los Angeles on January 26, 2014 at the Nokia Theatre.2012 found Simien &amp; his band mates seen performing their original song “Dance Everyday” in the Warner Brothers film “The Lucky One” starring Zac Efron and Blythe Danner, and directed by Oscar nominated director Scott Hicks. Simien’s version of zydeco standard “Uncle Bud” was also used in the film.<div><div>2009 signaled the release of Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog”, set in the city of New Orleans and featured their first black princess. Alas, history was made. Simien is the featured guest artist on “Gonna Take You There”, a zydeco flavored song penned by Randy Newman. Simien recorded the song with Newman in Los Angeles in late 2007 and it has became a favorite track for children everywhere! Simien’s student audiences all over the country sing along with him when he &amp; his band mates perform it during their school time concerts. History was also made in a very big way for this genre –  as it was the first time Disney featured zydeco music in a film!  As if that was not enough – the word zydeco was also spoken in the movie by one of the characters and has introduced generations of young children and families to an indigenous American roots music that because of this film, many heard for the very first time! We are forever grateful to John Lasseter and the team at Disney for this rare opportunity to have this genre immortalized in a Disney film.In 2005 Simien led HBO producers deep into Creole country for another high visible opportunity for the genre and he introduced them to the prodigious 5 year old zydeco talent, Guyland Leday. This gifted young musician was featured in the HBO doc “The Music in Me: Children’s Recitals from Classical to Latin, Jazz to Zydeco. This was a huge victory for his state, genre and Creole culture. It was also this year that they became the first zydeco artists to perform in Cuba for the U.S, State Department. In 2006, Carnegie Hall presented them in Mali, West Africa as part of their unique Global Encounters program. There have been multiple U.S. State Department tours to North Africa, Ukraine, Russia, Dominican Republic, Paraguay – all as part of the U.S Cultural Diplomacy efforts around the globe that began in <a href="http://time.com/5056351/cold-war-jazz-ambassadors/">1955.</a>However, it was 2008 that proved to be one of the most memorable years of their eventful career when they were honored with their first GRAMMY™ award and the first in zydeco since Rockin Sidney Simien received his in 1985. They also performed that day at The 50th GRAMMY™ Awards pre-Tel ceremony. This was also the culmination of 7 years of hard work to establish a new Grammy category for best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album that Simien and his wife/business partner, Cynthia led to success. They effectively changed the vocabulary of the Recording Academy and the trajectory of the history for both genres. Because of their efforts that began in 2001, to connect their region with the GRAMMY awards after decades with little or no recognition in the awards, since 2008 over 100 Cajun &amp; zydeco artists have garnered Grammy noms and awards. Their hard work embodies an inclusive leadership style and artist advocacy for the greater good of their broader music community, city (Lafayette &amp; Opelousas) and state of Louisiana. This is also now an important part of Southern roots music history, African American music history and the Americana Music Triangle.Simien was born in 1965 (appropriately) into the hippie folk and soul music era that still intrigues him today. He grew artistically being influenced and inspired by all of the music from that period. He was as influenced by Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel as he was by Sam Cooke and the Commodores. Since his family is documented in history books as one of the first Creole families to settle St. Landry Parish, his musical roots are firmly planted alongside the great zydeco pioneers like Chenier, Delafose, Chavis, Ardoin and that other Simien, Rockin Sidney, to name a few. He counts himself one of the fortunate few who hail from a generation with a direct link to these artists, some of whom mentored him as an emerging talent. He has assumed that same role to a new generation of young Zydeco hotshots because he understands how critical mentoring is to the success of his indigenous music that has become synonymous with the cultural identity of Louisiana and an important part of the musical landscape of this country.In 1983 at the young age of 18, Simien began touring professionally and by 20 he was sharing the stage with Fats Domino and Sarah Vaughn at the Bern Jazz Festival. His career exploded after that and Terrance remains a pivotal part of Zydeco music history. In the early 1980’s there were only 2 emerging bands touring nationally; the young Terrance and The Sam Brothers were the only artists reaching a younger audience with their indigenous roots music. Simien was also vital to the “renaissance” of a genre that was becoming extinct with the passing of each pioneer starting with Clifton Chenier in 1987. By the end of the 1990’s, all of the other influential pioneers had departed. This placed Terrance at the forefront of an exciting period of growth and popularity for this black roots music born in the rural, French speaking Creole communities of South Louisiana. Some might call him the OG of zydeco! We’re def down with that.Simien is blessed with an extraordinary talent and charisma that expresses our deepest human emotions through the original instrument: The Voice. He takes his audiences on a multicultural tour of the world as the many countries he’s visited while on tour have informed his musical language. The Thing is a four piece rock and roll band from New York City. The Thing consists of Lucas Ebeling (Drums), Jack Bradley (Guitar &#43; Vocals), Michael Carter (Guitar &#43; Vocals), and Zane Acord (Bass &#43; Vocals). Michael, Jack, and Zane bonded over a shared love for rock &amp; roll in school. Their influences span generations and styles like The Kinks, Cream, and artists of The Nuggets Compilation. As they progressed in skill and knowledge the band started envisioning a career inspired by the likes of Brian Jonestown Massacre, King Gizzard, and The Black Keys. The band originated in New York City in 2022. Months later, the band found drummer Lucas Ebeling who was freelancing in the New York jazz scene.  Since then they have played hundreds of shows across North America and Europe. Their debut LP, ‘Here’s the Thing’, was self-recorded by the band in Zane’s childhood home in Sharon, CT as well as Jack’s prior studio in Brooklyn. After establishing their sound and recording process, the band turned around the month after it was released to the public and recorded their second LP, ‘The Thing Is’ in May of 2023. The album was self-recorded in one month, with Lucas on the kit this time. With this album, they experimented more and recorded with all four members playing together in the same room. This method proved worthy, they recorded their third album in the same manner in January of 2024. The Thing’s self-titled third LP can be expected Summer 2025. LONG LIVE THE THING.

<div>Texas native Rhett Miller is perhaps best known as the frontman of the Dallas-based alt-country band the Old 97&#39;s, although he has also pursued a critically acclaimed solo career. Formed in 1993, the Old 97&#39;s built a devoted following with their brash blend of country and power pop influences, making a splash with 1995&#39;s Wreck Your Life, which won the group a brief stay on the roster of Elektra Records, a period kicked off with one of their finest hours, 1997&#39;s Too Far to Care. All four members also pursued side projects, but Miller&#39;s solo career captured the most attention, with the literate songwriter training his eye on such subjects as fatherhood, sex, and love. Making his solo bow with 2002&#39;s The Instigator, most of Miller&#39;s solo albums have been dominated by cool, melodic pop tunes with a drier and more confessional bent than his work with the band.</div>

To me, the journey to make this record paralleled exploring deep in the Maine woods  . You know deep down there&#39;s going to be an end to it, but you don&#39;t know when you’ll reach it   or what you&#39;re going to  experience along  the way.”He initially teased this era with the harmonica-buzzed and choir-backed  “Reflections.” Regarding the song, he reveals “‘Reflections’ is a song about confronting big changes in your life and having to stare down the idea of who you were in order to discover who you want to be. ’ A couple days after the  band decided to call it, I felt rudderless, looking for a clearer picture of who was on my own for the first time in a long while. One morning,  I started humming what would become the melody to the chorus and before I knew it, I had written the whole song.”On “Roll Down Slow,” wildly unrestrained fiddle wails over gently strummed chords. Written after a particularly harrowing night, Griffin says the song came after a bit of a wake up call. “It’s about looking yourself in the mirror and coming to terms with whatever choices you’ve made”. With clarity and catharsis, his vocals boom, “I’m in love with the pain of moving at the speed of sound”Then, there’s “Juliet.”“It’s a love song I’d been working on for a few years,” he notes. “I enjoy writing ‘sad love songs’. They seem to live in a deeper well than stories of found love and happily ever-afters”. Soundtracked by worn hands meandering across a fretboard, it’s more a song of loss than love. One where Romeo never found Juliet, but couldn’t stop his search. His lamentations cut deep as he exhales, “When I opened up my eyes, she wasn’t mine. My Juliet seems to be the only thing I’ll never find all of my days”Brash, heavy-handed piano set “Our Town” in motion, and his voice simmers over the swaying and swaggering rhythm. “Some say that the sun’s gone down in our town. But baby come on, we know better than that”.“I wanted to write a song that captured the feeling of where I’m from and also comments on the rough shape it’s in,” he says. “Two vignettes of people who live in a small town. They&#39;re sad and a little desperate, but I’m not sure they know it. Rural towns have their own specific problems and maybe none of us are exactly where we thought we’d be, but we still show our pride to our neighbors. That’s a very Maine and New England sentiment. That feeling is the essence in Our Town.”“I’m ready for a new chapter,” he says. “I don’t have a choice but to keep going; I have to make and play music. I had to make this record, which ultimately is both deeply personal and reflects where I call home, with all its failings and all its charm.  I hope I’m always curious, just as I hope I’m always proud of where I’ve been and where I can go. Steve Earle is one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of his generation. A protege of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, he quickly became a master storyteller in his own right, with his songs being recorded by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, The Pretenders, and countless others. 1986 saw the release of his record, Guitar Town, which shot to number one on the country charts and is now regarded as a classic of the Americana genre. Most recently, Earle’s 1988 hit Copperhead Road was made an official state song of Tennessee in 2023.Subsequent releases like The Revolution Starts...Now (2004), Washington Square Serenade (2007), and TOWNES (2009) received consecutive GRAMMY® Awards.
