Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, Modern English, Pharrell Williams, Ali Campbell, Ne-Yo, and Mary J Blige, are just a few of the artists that Mi5 Recordings, Universal Music Group, has released over the years. In this showcase, Mi5 Recordings will perform Modern English classics and original songs, with local talent following right after them and having a chance to play their music with the label. There will be short slots for small acts and half-hour slots for featured bands. Ted Mason, President of Mi5 Recordings, is a former member of the multiplatinum British rock/pop band Modern English. The band sold over 8 million records in the United States with hit songs like “Melt with You,” “Hands Across the Sea,” “Ricochet Days,” “16 Days,” “After the Snow,” and “I Can’t Breathe,” just to name a few. He is also an EMMY-nominated producer and composer for the Academy Award-winning HBO documentary Music by Prudence and a former journalist for the British newspaper The Guardian UK. As a musician, producer, and label rep, Ted has worked with some of the most successful artists in every genre, from Rock, Soul, and Hip Hop, to Classical, World, and Rai Music, such has Robert Plant, Ringo Starr, Santana, Peter Gabriel, Cheb Khaled, Rachid Taha, Prince, Snoop Dogg, Pharrell Williams, and many others. His latest album, The Road to Mecca, is a fusion combining traditional Indian instruments, Classical strings, and Western rock guitars and drums. Omar Haddad, A & R for the label, is a multi-instrumentalist, mainly a guitarist, singer-songwriter, and violinist, rooted in jazz, rock, pop, Latin, and classical music. He is of Arab descent, born in Canada, and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and he is based in New York City since 2007 and in the Hamptons since 2017. Omar is co-producing his original album with Ted Mason, recorded strings for Downton Abbey’s Star Elizabeth McGovern, and performed live in Times Square for spiritual leader Amma, The Hugging Saint. Omar is also a host at the Outrageous Open Mic at The Stephen Talkhouse as a regular member of the House Wreckers. Distributed and financed by Universal Music Group, Mi5 Recordings has been able to build a platform that welcomes multi-genre and multicultural releases. As noted, Mi5 has released several main-stream artists, yet the label includes flamenco musicians like Juan Carmona, African musicians like Papa Wemba, Youssou N'dour, and Vivian Chidid, and Algerian musicians like Cheb Khaled, Rachid Taha, and Souad Masse. In this way, an open environment was created to embrace the new, the diverse, and the individual visions of stars in any of these cultural expressions. Art is the mirror where we find ourselves, and without diversity in our media, our creativity and expressiveness are limited, and our communities suffer. For that reason it is very important to keep the bridge between a local community and the Universal Music Distribution networks alive: a way of talking directly to executives, directly playing with them, and discussing the record business over a beer. During the Fall, every Thursday night The Stephen Talkhouse hosts The Outrageous Open Mic (on Mondays in the Summer), and admission is totally free. Since this showcase is an opportunity for artists to introduce themselves to a record label, September 20th is going to be a little different: performers will submit their songs in advance and the slots will be organized beforehand. Also, since it will include a show by Mi5, there will be a $10 cover charge for non-performers. Contact Omar Haddad for more information, either at any of our Outrageous Open Mic Nights before the event, or via or About the Outrageous Open Mic Night: sign-ups open at 7pm., and music starts at 8pm. All styles, talents, and formats are welcomed. One song per artist ensures that everybody gets a chance to play. When everyone has played once, we go back to the top of the list of performers. Michael Mazzaraco: Master of Sound.

  • Stephen Talkhouse will be Closed until May 1st
We will be closed until May 1st After a week-long deliberation, we have decided that it is in the community's best interest that the Talkhouse close for two weeks. We are in uncharted waters and we will be monitoring the spread, and hopefully the containment, of the virus. This is a tough decision for us as we know we provide an outlet for people to have a good time. We feel that everyone's safety and health is what we should focus on until we have a better grasp of the situation. During the next two weeks we will be installing hand sanitizer's throughout the bar. We also will be instituting sanitizing protocols when we do open. To all our patrons, musicians, and everyone else we ask that you take this situation seriously and stay safe and healthy. When we do open please stay home if you suspect that you may be ill. We will update you if anything changes. Again, please stay safe.
